Social Media - Day #16: Google Earth

Get the world's geographic information at your fingertips. Google Earth is a powerful tool that enables you to fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean.

When you have the whole planet to explore, it can be pretty tricky deciding where to go first. Do you want to fly over the skyscrapers of New York City, or check out the Pyramids at Giza? You can also fly from outer space down to the streets with the new Street View in Google Earth 6. The possibilities are endless! Let's take a view minutes and explore the possibilities with a look at a few video tutorials from Google.

Activity #1: Type your home address and the address of Abilene High School (1300 North Cedar) into Google Maps directions. Find out the distance between the two addresses. Embed the map into a post on your blog.

Activity #2: Create a tour of your favorite spots around the world (Include at least 4-5). Once you have a route displayed in the 3D viewer, you can use the tour feature to "fly" the route in the 3D viewer, and you can save the directions to your "My Places" folder for later reference. The 3D viewer automatically starts the tour from the departure point, oriented in the correct direction as if you were flying over the route you have marked. The tour follows the route, stops at the end, and zooms out to encompass the entire route in the 3D viewer.
